2022 Summer Explorations Workshops

The 2022 Summer Explorations Workshops are for 5th – 8th Grade Students!

Program Details
-Each workshop session runs from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
-The cost is $50 per session (includes lunch and materials), and you may apply for as many sessions as you would like. Financial assistance provided on an as-need basis.

June 14 – Prof. Lisa Pope
Snake, Rattle & Roll
This program focuses on the reptiles and amphibians that call North Carolina home. Participants will learn how to properly capture, handle and identify turtles, salamanders, snakes and frogs found in the Fred J. Stanback Preserve.

Rocks, Fossils and Arrowheads
Wear your old tennis shoes for our day of rockhounding and exploring Grants Creek at Catawba “beach” to locate and identify evidence of past life, as well as present-day inhabitants that hide in the waters around us!
This is an adventure you do not want to miss!

Wildlife Tracks, Scat and Signs
Nature detectives know where to look for an adventure! Learn how to spot and identify common clues that wildlife species leave behind. Learn how to track animals that live in the hardwood swamp located behind Catawba College in the Fred J. Stanback Preserve. Swamp monsters anyone?

Bug Safari!
Join the Spider Doctor for an adventure in the Fred J. Stanback Ecological Preserve! We’ll find, capture, and identify insects, spiders, and other amazing creatures while we learn about bug biodiversity, important insect jobs, and how scientists use bugs to do ecosystem health checkups.
